The famous winter sports resort of Chamonix at the foot of Montblanc is the capital of French alpinism. It became famous in 1786 with the first ascent of Mont Blanc and had the honour of organising the first Winter Olympics in 1924. Chamonix competes with Zermatt in the magnificence of the glaciers and, especially in the rock needles of its Aiguilles, shows high mountain formations of unique wilderness. Stroll along the car-free promenade with its numerous shops, restaurants and cafés under the arcades, inviting you to linger. With the various cable and rack railways you can drive into the mountain world and enjoy a wonderful view.
4th day day trip Lake Geneva
Today you will take a trip to Lake Geneva - Le Léman, the "Great Water", as the Celts called it and the French still call Lake Geneva today. You will travel to a water of superlatives: Lake Geneva, with more than 580 square kilometres of water, mildest weather, 310 metres deep, is the deepest lake in France and Switzerland and the most water-rich lake in Central Europe. You will visit Ripaille Castle, located above the town of Thonon-les-Bains. The 15th century building is the former residence of Amadeus VIII, the first Duke of Savoy. Here you will be expected for a wine tasting. You can spend the lunch time in Thonon-les-Bains before you can be enchanted by the village of Yvoire, situated directly on Lake Geneva, with its richly decorated and flower-decorated stone houses. Afterwards you drive to Évian-les-Bains to the bottling centre of the beverage manufacturer Evian. With 6 million units per day and more than 1650 tonnes of bottles, Evian is the world's most important bottling centre. The water comes from the Cachat spring, which is very close to Lake Geneva and contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. Videos, models and exhibitions tell you everything about the history and the bottling process of mineral water.
