Come with us to Bavaria's largest lake, the Chiemsee! Look forward to the beautiful backdrop of the foothills of the Alps, the hilly meadows, the ringing of cowbells, the view of Lake Chiemsee and much more.
Welcome to Prien am Chiemsee!
Located in the heart of Upper Bavaria between Munich and Salzburg, at the foot of the Alps, with a view of the "Kampenwand", lies Prien - the largest community on Lake Chiemsee.
Prien, the popular air and Kneipp health resort has a lot to discover for its visitors: the spa park, the former craftsmen's quarter with its historic houses, the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the nostalgic Chiemsee train, the local history museum and the gallery in the old town hall. Art history enthusiasts can marvel at the magnificent ceiling paintings by Johann Baptist Zimmermann in Prien's Mariä Himmelfahrt parish church or frescoes from the 12th century in the Urschalling chapel. The local history museum, founded in 1913 and located directly in the center of Prien, houses treasures from the past.
"Bavarian Sea" is what they affectionately call their Chiemsee in Bavaria. With the Chiemgau mountains as a charming backdrop, the lake draws its unique charm primarily from its three small islands. The island of Herrenchiemsee is famous for its pompous replica of the Palace of Versailles, with which King Ludwig II finally drove himself to ruin. Much smaller but hardly less famous is Fraueninsel with its 300 inhabitants and the old convent where nuns still live today. Together with the third island, the uninhabited Krautinsel, they form the tiny community of Chiemsee.
